20 Year Anniversary

Yellow Springs Dharma Center Anniversary Celebrations

Yellow Springs Dharma Center, Spring 2008

Community Meditation

We held a 30-minute open meditation and at the end dedicated the  merit for the benefit of all beings.  Afterwards friends old and new enjoyed refreshments and conversation.

Open House

Donna Denman, Robert Pryor, and Katie Egart related the why and the how of the Dharma Center’s founding from first glimmer and early roots to the present day: a story told in three parts at 2pm.   The Library Committee set up a history slideshow, with pictures that brought back many happy memories of the people and events of the past 20 years.  Open house included light refreshments.

Buddha’s Enlightenment

We held our traditional yearly gathering to celebrate the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha, followed up by a catered lunch at noon.

When the Iron Bird Flies

The Dharma Center along with Antioch College invited everyone to this documentary film. An up-close and personal journey following the astounding path of one of the world’s great spiritual traditions from the caves of Tibet to the mainstream of Western culture. The film highlights the provocative exchange between Buddhist practitioners and Western scientists and educators now at the heart of the emergence of a genuine Western tradition of Buddhism. The film’s producer and co-director, Amber Bemak an Antioch alum, Antioch Buddhist Studies in India alum and former Dharma Center resident was on hand to answer questions about her film. You can view the trailer on YouTube.

Calligraphy

Zen Teacher, Roshi Daniel Terragno, presented the Center with a new calligraphy for the Meditation Hall. (Travel problems changed the date to May 18).  Meditation at 7:30 pm was followed by presentation, tea and snacks, and conversation.

Many people worked very hard to plan, set up, and present this very full schedule of events, including the Anniversary Committee (Robert Pryor, Dianeah Wanicek, Linda Potter, Donna Denman, and Mary Frost-Pierson), the Refreshments Committee (Linda Potter, Sandy King, and Sarah Snock), the History Panel (Robert Pryor, Katie Egart, and Donna Denman), Co-Producer of When the Iron Bird Flies, Amber Bemak, and our Librarians (Donna Denman, Carolyn Ray, and Dorothy Smith).  A deep gasho to them, and to all those who joined us and lent a hand with setup and cleanup on the day.
